HOW I CAN HELP
Overcoming Phobias
If your fear is interfering with your everyday life or stopping you from doing something you want to do, you most likely have a phobia — and hypnotherapy can help.
Is there something you'd love to do but find yourself avoiding because of fear?
Perhaps the thought of flying fills you with dread, you panic at the sight of a spider, or you're putting off an important medical appointment because you're frightened of needles.
You might even feel embarrassed about your fear, particularly when other people don't seem to understand why something that appears harmless to them feels so frightening to you.
But phobias aren't simply a matter of being silly or overreacting. The fear you experience is real, even when you know logically that you're unlikely to be in danger.
The good news is that fears and phobias can be worked on, and you don't necessarily have to live with the same level of fear forever.
When Does a Fear Become a Phobia?
We all experience fear from time to time. It's a natural response designed to protect us from danger.
I enjoy flying, for example, but I'm not particularly keen on turbulence! When the seat belt sign comes on and the plane starts bouncing around, I can feel a little nervous. However, it wouldn't stop me from getting on a plane again.
For someone with a flying phobia, things can be very different. The fear may be so overwhelming that they avoid flying altogether, even if it means missing holidays or visits to family and friends.
The same can happen with needles, spiders, heights, enclosed spaces, driving or countless other situations.
When fear becomes so intense that it leads to significant distress or stops you doing things you'd otherwise like or need to do, it may have developed into a phobia.
How Can a Phobia Affect You?
Phobias can cause a powerful physical and emotional response, sometimes even when you're only thinking about the thing you fear.
You might experience:
-
A racing heart or palpitations.
-
Sweating, trembling or shaking.
-
Feeling sick or having butterflies in your stomach.
-
Changes in your breathing or feeling short of breath.
-
Dizziness or feeling light-headed.
-
An overwhelming urge to escape or avoid the situation.
-
Worrying in advance about having to face your fear.
These reactions are part of the body's natural fight-or-flight response. The difficulty is that this response can sometimes be triggered even when there is little or no immediate danger.
Knowing that you're safe doesn't always stop your body from reacting as though you're not.
Where Do Phobias Come From?
Sometimes there's an obvious reason for a phobia.
Perhaps you had a frightening experience as a child, witnessed someone else's fear, or went through something that left a lasting impression.
Other times, there's no clear explanation at all. You might feel as though you've always had the fear, without knowing where it began.
And that's absolutely fine.
You don't have to remember exactly when or why your phobia started to begin working on it.
Although understanding the background can sometimes be helpful, my focus is on how the fear affects you now and what we can do to help you respond differently.
How Can Hypnotherapy Help with Fears and Phobias?
Hypnotherapy can be a useful complementary approach for exploring and managing fears and phobias.
During our sessions, we'll work together to understand your particular fear and develop ways of responding to it with greater calm and confidence.
Depending on your needs, I may use a combination of:
-
Hypnosis and relaxation to help you practise feeling calmer and more in control of your responses.
-
Positive visualisation to mentally rehearse approaching previously frightening situations in a different way.
-
Practical techniques to help you manage anxious thoughts and physical sensations.
-
Gradual confidence-building exercises to support you in taking manageable steps towards your goals.
-
Pre-recorded hypnosis sessions or guided exercises selected to reinforce our work between appointments.
You won't be expected to confront your biggest fear before you feel ready. We'll work at a pace that's appropriate for you, with your comfort and wellbeing in mind.
Hypnotherapy isn't a guaranteed cure, and some phobias may benefit from other approaches, particularly structured exposure-based therapy. If another form of support would be more suitable, I'll be happy to discuss that with you.
